I know, I’m obsessed about a lot of things… but two of those things hold a pretty special place at the top: Halloween and Harry Potter! And if you combine the two of them, you end up with costumes and magic!!!
Talking about Halloween costumes is a pretty common thing in our house. Every year, we go back and forth with different ideas in the months leading up to October 31st, trying to please everyone, since I’m pretty hooked on family themed costumes… oh yeah, I’m one of those! I don’t think I can’t top last year’s creations: Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez. I’ve been able to design some pretty awesome costumes over the years, but these two cars earned the all-time Oscar award for Halloween costumes in our home!
So this year, at the beginning of the summer, Liam told me he wanted to dress up as Harry Potter! That boy is after my heart for sure… on top of the Halloween costume, he also told me I should start planning his Harry Potter birthday party for January! I’ll take that, thank you God, finally a BDay party theme I also love!!!
On the other hand, Logan asked me if he could be a combination of dressing up in his Mario Bros’ pajama, with sunglasses, a bow and a top hat… not sure where he gets all his ideas from… but I love his imagination. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree they say!
So since we’re going in Orlando in March, I decided I really needed to buy the official HP robe for Liam for when we’ll be visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal, but the price tag was kind of steep… and I knew that once Logan would see Liam’s robe, I’d have to get another one, so I wasn’t sure what to do. BUT then, just in time, Pottery Barn Kids came to my rescue with their new HP line, which got me even more obsessed with everything HP. So without any hesitations I ordered two robes, and the rest is history: from the moment the robes were came in, Logan putted his on and right away confirmed he was going to be a Slytherin for Halloween. They’ve been dressing up and playing none stop with their costumes and wands since then, and I couldn’t be happier.
One thing I always do comes October is a Halloween photoshoot. I find we’re always rushing the morning of Halloween or right before Trick or Treating, so a few weeks in advance, we dress up, I bribe them (a little) and we take many pictures, like just enough to please my obsession! And let me tell you, this year did not disappoint, as it’s been one of my favorite Halloween photoshoot ever. We went back to Courges et Cie to pick up our pumpkins, you know, since we loved it so much last year… and just like a few other traditions we have, I couldn’t imagine a year we wouldn’t go… such a beautiful pumpkin patch, set in the most laid back of setting, family-friendly, and on top of that they serve the most delicious squash fries, squash poutine and pumpkin donuts.
So our trunk was full of props and costumes, we got there, got a wheel barrel and made our way to the beautiful field full of pumpkins; and it was magical. The boys putted on their costumes right away and then played around just like they do at home, which gave me a lot of time to take pictures. I think they felt like they were in one of the movie (minus Voldemort, of course, cause they’re scared of him), playing with their wands, casting spells, laughing, running, and searching for the perfect pumpkin. Also, in order to follow the theme, I had made myself a Luna Lovegood Gryffindor Lion head/hat the night before! But Liam didn’t let me wore it, as he really wanted to be the one taking pictures with it… so of course he did… and he was so cute! Logan was wearing the houses Sorting Hat… oh boy! That boy should be in a movie for sure!!!
I couldn’t wait to get home and take a better look at my boys’ picture and all the magic they had created. And I was so happy I was able to get some awesome shots. That’s what I love the most about Halloween, the magic, the mystery, to costumes, pretending to be anyone you want; plus the candies… of course the candies don’t hurt either.
So if you need any help finding awesome Halloween costumes, just contact me, I will not have enough Halloweens in my lifetime to be able to dress up in everything I’d like, so I would for sure share some of my ideas!
Enjoy this (most) festive month of all, light up your Jack O’Lantern, blast up Thriller and get ready to hit all the houses on your street. Treat yourself, eat many treats, and trick or treat with your kids, I know I will do all of this by October 31st!!!
