camp woods part II

Since this week will probably be one of the nicest we’ve had all summer, I think it’s a perfect timing for sharing the last few weeks of Camp Woods Summer 2017! In all honesty, and we probably all feel the same way here, even if I go back in memories, as far as I can remember, summer 2017 was definitely one of the worst summer ever. It feels like it rained basically every day, with everything outside being wet all the time, making it so difficult to plan ahead for a full day of activities, and apparently making it even more difficult for Brian to cut the grass weekly! Oh well.  Still, I got to say that I did enjoy my time off, but it feels like there were no memorable pool days or parties, and only a few bouncy-castle-day-out in the backyard, with everything depending on my weather network app while always waiting for the next sunny day to come by; and like I said, there was not a lot of them (but that didn’t stop us from having fun!!!).

Like I’ve explain before in Camp Woods 2016 and Camp Woods part 1 of 2017, I try to find activities that will interest the boys, as well as myself, with a theme, an outings or with meals. Early during my last week before I went back to work, Liam decided to join me in watching Harry Potter. I always knew he would love it but I wasn’t sure it was aged appropriate. But as I was watching the first movie, one morning while cooking, he joined me in the kitchen and sat on the counter and he was immediately glued right there. I changed the language to French for him (outch! so funny in French!) and explained that it was just a story, that everybody were friends in real life by showing him some pictures of the actors from the net, while making sure he understood as the story unfolded. So our last theme week was Harry Potter and just like that, a new addict was born!  Probably one of my favorite week ever, well, right behind the countdown-to-Disneyland-week we had last year, as nothing won’t probably ever beat that!

Since that last week off at home watching the movies coincided with the Harry Potter 20th anniversary, well, of course we made a cake! Just like the one Hagrid brings to Harry. Also made notebooks themed after every houses, of course I’m Gryffindor!  Oh, AND wands!  We had a blast making them; with chopsticks, glue gun and paint! Done within minutes and hours of fun. Of course, there is the occasional eye poke, but mostly, I was turned into a frog by one and then into a flower by the other!

We also had to have a Moana week. That movie, let me tell you, AMAZING, both for adults and kids. If you haven’t seen it with your kids yet, do it now! The soundtrack is just awesome, and it’s still is even after you’ve listened to it a 1000 times. We made Kakamora from real coconuts. They’ve learned how to open coconuts to release the water; and they do NOT like coconut water!!! So once empty, we painted faces on them and glued arms and legs. So fun to make. We found the cutest free Pinterest Moana Bingo and played so many games. And then we got dress up… I had to be Moana! Liam Pua and Loggy was Hey-Hey! Made leis out of ferns and flowers from our backyard. It was awesome… all that was missing was the ocean!

We had another Nemo week this year; but what can I say, we just love the movies so much! I was lucky enough to find the cheapest and best craft at my local dollar store: Felt Sew Kits of Dory and Nemo. Perfect for their first sewing experience. Made my mama’s (and lifetime sewer’s) heart so proud. Painted fishies with our hands and played for hours in the pool, all pretending to be lost fishes, just like Dory.

Star Wars week was cut short because we decided to go on a road trip last minute; but we still managed to make pool noodles lightsabers. Had a Star Wars pic nic, and played with our Tsum Tsum making stop motion animation. The boys love to do that; they could spend hours making them and watching them. I love when they can’t stop laughing at their own little short films!  So cute.

So, now that it’s mid-September already, I’m just like everyone else, wondering where the summer went. But all that will be shortly forgotten if this week’s perfect weather lasts for a while… cause with the next 6 weekends being jam packed with some of our favorite activities, it would make it so much more enjoyable with some great fall weather. And after the shitty summer we just got, come on, we deserve it!!!

Well, sunny or not, I’ve spotted my first pumpkin this morning, and it made me happy, cause Halloween is coming and everything is good in the world (well for me!) when it’s Halloween!!!

may the fourth be with you

In our home, any reason is a good one to celebrate!  So now that the boys are into Star Wars, ‘May the Fourth be with you’ was a good reason enough to have our own little Star Wars waffle party.

I found a Star Wars waffle maker back in December at Wal-Mart; and of course I had to buy it 5 months in advance just for May 4th; and as I expected, it was a hit with the boys.

So we whipped up some batter, dressed up in our Star Wars pj’s, and ate whipped cream and delicious maple syrup waffles.  All that while watching Star Wars Lego.

We will also have a Star Wars week during Camp Wood this summer, so I didn’t want to go overboard with the activities.  I’ll have to keep them entertained all summer long after all, which won’t be an easy task, so I must keep some interesting stuff up my sleeves!  Last week we ended up painting terra cotta pots with their favorite Star Wars characters and then planted a plant in it for their room.  Let see how long these last… as they are supposed to take care of it!  Yeah right.

It’s fun to have some out of the ordinary day in the middle of the week.  It changes the routine, and they just love doing stuff during the week that we usually do during the weekend.  So find a day, find a theme, and go along for some out the ordinary fun this week!

I’ve also included a little video of Liam, playing the Star Wars Theme song.  I’m so happy he’s playing the piano.  Let’s hope he continues to love it.  We’re so proud of you!

May the Fourth be with you!

one amazing weekend

Every Sunday, about right after diner time, I end up asking myself the same question week after week: why are weekends so short?  This weekend was so much fun, but once again, it just went by way too fast…

Started with a lazy Friday night, pizza and a movie.  We finally watched Star Wars ‘The Force Awaken’.  It was an immediate hit, and I have a feeling that Star Wars will be part of our household for a while.  The boys loved it, and we all can’t wait to see the next one!  Well, except Brian who chose to binge-watch The Office instead.  Yeppers!

On Saturday, we had planned our first snowshoe outing and my sister-in-law Annick and her family were coming with us.  In the morning, Brian prepared his famous family soup (soupe aux coquilles à matante Aline) and made sandwiches for everyone.  One day I’ll talk about how awesome her family is; my boys are in love with their cousins Nini and Jay-Jay, her daughter and son.  So we all had lunch together, got ready, putted on our gear and headed out to Rockland’s golf course.  Within 5 minutes of being there, I knew it was going to be a hit!  I didn’t even had my snowshoes on and the boys had already climbed a snowbank with their mini snowshoes!  So we started our little venture on the never been touched snow, ready to try our new snowshoes.  By the way, if you’re thinking about buying some, now is the best time.  Everywhere you look, they’re on sale.  Bought the one for the boys at Giant Tiger for 30$ and they are great.

So we walked for maybe half an hour, stopped on a little bridge, watched the flowing water of the unfrozen creek, threw a few snowballs, made a few races and found some walking sticks.  My little Logan was a natural, leading the pack while not complaining once.  He was all about being the chief and having rosy cheeks.  Our entire adventure lasted only an hour (felt like 3!), but everybody had a great time.  We clearly found a new activity our family loves.  Plus it’s a great workout!  Win-win!

Went back home, all sat by the fire, our cousin Jojo joined us for a sleepover, played games and ordered the best Thai food in town!  Well, Brian and my brother-in-law actually drove to downtown Ottawa to get it, but it was so worth it!!!  Then stayed up way past our bedtimes listening to music we’d like to hear at our funeral… seems like an awkward discussion, but we had such a great time!

I’m all about lazy Sunday.  So in the morning, Jojo and I had homemade pink cinnamon buns and played bingo with the boys!  After lunch, I had to sneak in a little nap, you know, just because it’s Sunday and I can… but then I felt all rested and we decided to go back for snowshoeing round 2.  Bundled up the boys and packed up snacks, cause the boys wanted to go back for a picnic on the bridge at the golf course… Logan leading the way, we found our way back to the creek and had our picnic.  We did the same trail than the day before, then found more sticks, honestly, my kids can never have too many sticks… I don’t understand this one… it’s probably a boys thing!

We got home in time for the football game… and our team made it!  (Brian loves the Pats; I just love Tom!!!)  So Super Bowl 51 here we come.  Already planning on the menu… can’t wait!  And just like that, the weekend was over and I was already making plans for next Friday!

So, well, weekends may be short, but you know what, they’re just the best.  And I can’t wait for next one!

liam turns bb-6

Our weekend shenanigans are over!  2 days, 3 birthday parties and 67 guests later…we are done!  Our  little man turned six on Friday.  How did this happened?  Six???  Maybe 3 or 4 but 6…bye bye baby.  It’s hard to see your first child growing up and it does go by so fast.  He’s changed so much in the last few months, he’s less clingy, talks with lots of new words and ask for our help much less than
before and the worst, he gives less kisses.  My heart is torn.  So I will stop with the drama of having a 6 years old and talk about our weekend festivities!

So I like a good party and my boys too!  A few months before their birthday, we talk about what they like, what they want and who they want to be there.  Star Wars was an easy theme, the boys still haven’t seen the movies but that’s about to change because we received them for his birthday.  Guest list, we have a big close family, we want everybody, so we had our friends come over for pizza on Friday night, a few of his school friends came yesterday morning and our families came over for some roasted hot dogs and cake last night!

Cakes, it’s always about the cakes!  I love making my babies their cakes.   It makes me so happy to create the things they love in sugar!  I made 6 cakes.  Baked  and decorated them all after school this week.  Star Wars decoration were really easy to find, lots from the $store, lots free on Pinterest and I bought the invitations and photo booth accessories from Etsy.  I made my t-shirt, another idea from Pinterest and Brian and the boys attire came from Gap Kids and Old Navy.  Bought some cheap wrapping paper before Christmas for the photo booth wall (new found favorite of Logan, taking photo booth pictures…we have at least 100!)

When we went to Boston in the fall, we visited one of my favorite stores, Pottery Barn Kids.  I love this place!  They have a Star Wars line that is to die for.  I want the Star Wars sleeping bags sooo badly.  I fell in loving with their marquee lit up sign.  I decided I (well I mean Frank) could do this way cheaper, like for less than 25$.  Found some Christmas string lights in clearance, painted a piece of wood, Frank drilled the sign and added the frame.  Put in the light and bingo, I had the most awesome marquee sign EVER.  I will put it up in their playroom, the light bulbs are in plastic, so unbreakable!  Win-win!

Of course we had a few games.  Our favorite, donuts-on-a-string, always a hit!  We decorated Star Wars cookies.  Also played, place the lightsaber on Yoda.  A BB-8 pinata was a must.  And we had the NOT so brilliant idea of buying lightsabers for all kids…do NOT attempt this when you are outnumbered!  I made little Jedi costumes for all the kids and took lots of photo booth pictures.

Food, we had soooo much.  Pizza, fries and poutine, wings, cookies, Princess Leia’s Buns, candy, chips, hot dogs, cupcakes, Edible Ewoks, Liam’s favorite raspberry pie, Yoda’s guacamole and CAKE!  I’m no eating until the next birthday…well maybe not but I do need to recover from this weekend!

So today we took down the decorations, played with toys and looked at all the pictures we took.  We love parties, we love our family and friends and most of all, we love our babies.  Happy Birthday Liam.  You deserve all the time we spent for your parties and more!  You’ve been one amazing little boy since the moment you were born.

Our costumes for this year are a bit different from the last few years… my boys are growing up and so are their tastes!  So I went with it!

They don’t know anything about Star Wars…for a long time they called it CarWar.  They’ve never watched a movie or show, know what Star Wars’ about or what they stand for.  But last summer, Liam went on the Star Wars 3D ride in Disneyland at 10:30 pm for his last ride of the day and came out a fan.  The following day everything Liam wanted was some CarWar stuff; so did his baby brother!

So, in 2016, we are officially Star Wars fans (I grew up watching the movies, but Brian had never heard about them until I came in the picture and dressed up as Queen Amidala in grade 13).  I still wanted to make our costumes; Liam as BB8, Logan as R2D2 or has he calls him Hardy-too, Brian as Chewbacca (not included in our pictures because of his major lack of fun-ness!) and myself as Princess Leia (I have the hair so why not used it!).

My mom knitted some hats for the boys and I sowed and glued their robot costumes (probably the easiest of costumes ever made).  So they were not too complicated to do, but they are just so nice!  We went to a very shady part of Brian’s hometown for the pictures, a place call Peace Mountain, which was perfect for taking pictures, but a place I don’t recommend visiting alone, especially if you’re easily scared like my chicken-shit Chewbacca!

Now, we can’t wait to decorate our pumpkins and make special treat bags for our friends.  Only 1 more week to go!

I love family themed costumes, I hope they’ll let me do it for a bit longer!

So what’s your costume this year?

Last year, Camp Woods got it’s start!  Our kids don’t go to summer camps, so I decided to bring the summer camps to us!  The last two summers, I’ve chosen weekly themes based on their interest (who am I kidding, I choose theme according to what I want to do!!!  After all, I’m chief of Camp Woods!)

In 2015, we had Cars, Big Hero 6, Pirate Week and Minions.

Food, crafts, treats, visit to the theater and costumes are all part of the fun!  My boys love it!  They have no clue what’s coming and are mostly excited about everything that I propose!  It keeps them entertained and it’s make me less lazy!

This year was extra special, when school ended, we only had a couple of days before our trip to California.  So, we had a countdown Disney theme for 12 days!  My favorite week EVER!  After we got back, we had: Pokémon, Cars, Bunny, Mario Bros, Nemo and Star Wars weeks!

So here a few pictures of Camp Woods 2016!  We had a blast…now, we must get ready for back to school!
