halloween kids friendly movie night

Well finally, let the fall decorations season begin!!! I’ve actually been quite good so far, it’s almost October and I’ve only started decorating for fall earlier this week; but boy has this got me in like a full-blown Halloween mood! I’m pretty sure I have more Halloween decorations than I have for Christmas’ or anything else, and I am not done. I know I will buy more, it’s just a question of when I’ll have time to go to Home Sense or Target next! So this week the boys have been going crazy pulling out everything from our Halloween boxes, trying on some old costumes and decorating every crooks and cranny they can find; but of course I’m okay with this. I actually love it! I always feel like my house loses weight when I see stuff going out of the house instead of in! So since I got my eyes on some new things to come in, I decided I needed to have some sort of purging week… and I did… and it feels so good to sell and give stuff away. You know, to make room for new stuff!

I’ve got a few festive outings planned for next weekend. I want to hit Courges & Cie, a gorgeous pumpkin patch I’ve blogged about last year, and I also want to visit our local farmer’s market to go see my friend Pascal Ice Cream. One other thing on the list for the weekend is a Halloween movie marathon! But not the gory type… no wayyyy. I can’t handle scary movies very well and neither does my husband (if you know him, you know what I mean), so instead, I will watch some fun and good and cute and almost scary movies from our own collection; well, family movies! Since we don’t have cable here, the only thing the boys watch are movies, so I always keep a small basket filled with their current favorites close to the TV, but around this time of year, it is filled with Halloween themed and festive movies. So I decided to round up our favs and maybe you could have a fun movie night at home yourself!

1- Harry Potter: Of course this had to be number one. It couldn’t be anything else. My boys are NOT scared, at all, of all the HP movies. We are all addicts and we’re not ashamed of it! The entire collection can be seen over and over again, so if you haven’t watch Harry in a while, this Halloween season is the perfect time!

2- Mickey Mouse Monster Musical: I can’t tell you how many time my kids have watched this DVD. I think I know every single lines of the shows. Yet, I’m excited to sing “Monster Boogie” every single time. With only 22 minutes per episodes, these are fun to watch in the morning while the kids eat breakfast or while you need keep them quiet while you are getting ready for work… or not so quiet with all the singing!

3- Adams Family: My brother and I watched this on and on when we were kids. I just LOVE that movie. I’ve watched it last year and it still holds up even 30 years later. I’m sure you’ve seen this before… but you need to see it again!

4- Ghostbuster: No, no, no, no, no… not the new one, even if I’m all for “Girl Power” and stuff, nooo, not the new one; but the very first one! I still think it is way more funny than scary, and that’s probably why I love it. We usually all get a good laugh watching this. And now, I bet the song is stuck in your head… right? Well you’re welcome! I ain’t afraid of no ghost!

5- Hocus Pocus: Okay, so this one is mostly for me! My boys think it’s freaking boring, my husband judges me for watching it in loops year after year, but I get such a thrill out of watching it 20 times per season, they just don’t understand, and I just can’t explain it. Also, there’s a book sequel out that I’m currently reading, so I’m really into it right now, and can’t wait to watch it for the first time in 2018. This is clearly a must… every… single… year! It is fun, light and so amusing to watch Bette sing; and what can I say, I just can’t get enough of it!

6- Monsters Inc. & University: These two movies are simply AMAZING! Make a marathon out of it. Order pizza, wear festive pj’s, have a bowl of popcorn with candy, and just sit back and enjoy. You will have the best of time, guaranteed. Can they make a 3rd one? Please.

7- Hotel Transylvania: HEY kids’ movie lovers, you got to watch these ones. Adam Sandler is to die for. Great for the kids, yet so many clever lines for adults; and the music is amazing! The third movie will be out on DVD or Blu-ray in the next few weeks, so you can have a three movies marathon in the comfort of your couch… which I know we will.

8- E.T.: Kind of afraid to say this, but I’ve never seen ET. I know I’ve seen part of it, and I know was afraid while seeing it, but this year is the year. I’m doing this for you, my beautiful Drew. I’ve bought the illustrated ET book and I intend on reading it to the boys and then watch the movie with them. We’ll see how it goes. At least I know that if I’m scared, we’re all going to be scared together!

9- The Nightmare Before Christmas: For me it’s a Halloween movie, for some, Christmas (although it is clearly NOT!). I was not a fan of it growing up, but I’ve been for the last couple of years. Best part for me: the music. And last year, Liam learned it on the piano… so we will keep on watching it, and then get him to practice. It’s Tim Burton… so, like always… NOT for everyone!

10- Casper: Can I keep you? Oh, Devon Sawa… I was so in love with the teenage version of you. I still remember the summer the movie came out, I went to see it twice in one weekend with my friend Jannick. My Mimi had bought me a Casper pajama and the soundtrack, and I was so obsess… and I think it is STILL amazing! Right? We will watch this for sure a few times before October 31st!

So many other movies could have made the cut, but I tried to keep the list somewhat kids friendly. After all, Halloween is for kids, right? Well, for kids and for adults like ME!!! Hope you have fun watching some of these movies; I have to run now, the boys are waiting for me to see if ET goes back home or what. Enjoy fall my friends, this is the best time of the year!

an harry potter kinda weekend

This weekend was nothing short of amazing. I’m exhausted today, but it was sooo worth it. I had been eyeing an Harry Potter concert in Montreal for months, and early last week, Brian got us three tickets for Saturday night; and I have been prepping ever since! Liam and I have been watching Harry Potter every chance we got over the last 6 months, and I knew he would love the concert. Logan, not so much! That’s why he only got 3 tickets!

So on Friday night, I organized the ultimate Harry Potter and the Sorcerers’ Stone viewing party to set the mood for the next day. I decorated the living room with floating candles, houses crest, books, more candles, and our wands, of course!

For the occasion I had baked a cake, prepared some nutella filled  “Howlers” pop-tarts, had some popcorn ready, filled lots of different sized jars with candy and chocolate, and displayed all of it on our huge credenza. We also brought up the kids playroom tv for the occasion. So once we got home from work and school, the boys played outside with the neighbors before inviting them to come inside and watch the Harry Potter movie and share the fun night with them. They had never watched the movie so I was very excited for them… they’re so lucky to see this movie for the first time! They all had lots of popcorn while Logan had way too much candy and chocolate; but still, he was the first one to ask to go to bed!

On Saturday morning we cleaned up the house and left for Montreal, while dropping Logan at my Mom’s place on the way there. We rarely go out with only one child. Maybe we should do it more often, but they pretty much like the same things, and it’s fun to spend some family time, so we always bring both of them with us, whatever we do. But on Saturday we decided that we would try to do this more often with only one of them since Liam just loved it, and I’m sure Loggy will too! Liam even told us couple times that he felt like he was on a vacation with the two of us! I thought it was so cute for him to tell us that. And I loved that he felt like that! I guess he needs time away from his brother once in a while!

So we went shopping with him… wow, so much easier with only ONE kid!!! Then we brought him over to Scarolie’s for diner; which is Brian and I favorite Italian place in Montreal (and has been ever since the first time we’ve been there on one of our first date back in the 90’s when we were just teenagers!). Liam loved his pasta, ate a lot of bread, and with a 4:30 reservation for three, well by 5:45 we were out of there and on our way to Place des Arts, Downtown Montreal. Once we made it there, Liam putted on his Gryffindor robe while I wore my Luna sunglasses. Liam and I had also both brought our wands! Good thing cause Liam would have surely wanted one, and they were like 50$… while mine costed around 1$ to make! Not bad, right? But of course we had to buy him something! So when he saw an owl stuffed animal who looked just liked a mini version of Harry’s, how could I say no! So he was walking in Place des Arts with his owl looking just like Harry!

So we made it to our mezzanine seats, and the concert hall was full. The show consisted of the second movie of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, on a large high definition screen with a live symphony orchestra playing the movie score. It was quite impressive to watch –and to hear– the orchestra, and sometime I would completely forget about the movie and just get lost and captivated by the music, and vice versa. Even though it’s a very long movie, Liam didn’t take his eyes away from the screen, even for a minute. Once the show was over, he told me he was coming back in June for the next movie. I didn’t even know that there was another show coming up. Guess he saw that somewhere! But of course we will be back. This will probably become an annual date with Liam… as we both like movies, music, and a bit of magic! So by the time we made it back to the car, Little Harry was pretty tired, and before we even got out of the theater parking lot, he was sound asleep.

Sunday consisted of visiting family and playing in a huge piles of leaves. We so lucky with this mild October weather that we are trying to spend has much time outside as possible.

We had a perfect Fall weekend. Hope you have a magical week my friends!

float like a cadillac, sting like a beemer

It’s already June, the summer is here, it’s the end of the school year, the days keep on going by so quickly, there’s so much to do at work, but you know what… by the end of the week, no matter what, I’ll be on VACATION for two full months.

It seems like our minds have been on over-drive for Lighting McQueen, Mater and their friends for the last couple of weeks.  We’ve known about Cars 3, the new Disney/Pixar movie, coming out for almost a year now and the boys have been counting the days for at least the last 30 of them.

We had planned on seeing the movie on Saturday night at the drive-in, cause watching Cars in a car is a must!  We actually saw Cars 2 in Lake George 6 years ago at the drive-in with 6 month old Liam sitting/sleeping on my lap, and we loved it!  But on Thursday night, after a long day at work I decided to surprise the boys with a last minute trip to the theater to watch the movie premiere.  They were ecstatic.  And we all fell in love with the movie, all over again.

Two weeks ago, at 1 am, while not sleeping and scrolling on Facebook, I found a meet-Lightning-McQueen-event at the Kanata Canadian Tire.  The next morning, we had breakfast, packed our toy cars, drove to Kanata and got in line.  We arrived early, so by 10:05 we had already had our picture taken.  We then played with remote controlled Cars for a little while before driving back home.  So happy we had decided to go early… we did NOT end up waiting an hour and a half like some of the other moms did.

After meeting McQueen, the boys started to watch the two Cars movies and play with their little cars non-stop.  So let’s just say that my summer Camp Woods tradition is back and last week was Cars week!  The boys bought cars from the new movie with their chore money, we played games, they wore matching pj’s (of course my fav!) and then it was drive-in time!

We spent Saturday morning buying treats and fun drinks, baking a cake and making McQueen eyes for our car (a must for watching Cars at the drive-in, right?).  Brian was really not impressed with my suggestion (more like me begging to do it!!!) to install the McQueen eyes right before entering the drive-in lot.  Well, I think he may have considered doing it for a second, but then said no!  That did not stopped me… cause that’s the first thing I did right after he had stopped the car!

It was really hot and humid, but thankfully the rain and storm held off.  So while I was installing my McQueen eyes, Brian was installing something almost as essential as popcorn at the Gatineau drive-in: nets on our windows!  At our local drive-in there are two large movie screens, hundreds of cars and a lot of mosquitos… or billions of mosquitos as Brian kept complaining about before, during and after the movie.  So we ate tons of crap and sweets with the saltiest popcorn ever!  It was just great.  The boys and myself seated in the front while Brian and Jojo watched the movie on the back seat with their own wine mini-bar!  We had to crank up the air conditioner once in a while, but beside that, it was pretty quiet other than the casual KA-CHOW the boys made every time they saw McQueen doing something funny!

I didn’t expect crying during Cars 3, but boy I did.  I was so nostalgic… and, you know what, it was not only because of how much I love McQueen… but more because things are changing so much, the boys are growing up so fast, and the world seems so messed up sometimes, all around us, while all we’re actually trying to do is to find our place and be healthy and keep on enjoying small things that make us happy.

Well, there are no better things in life than spending a Saturday night, all snuggling in our car, making memories and laughing all together.  I hope the boys will remember these summer nights for as long as I will.  ‘Forever could never be long enough for me; together could never be close enough for me’ as long as I have them both sitting on my lap for an entire movie at the drive-in! (BTW, lyrics from the group Train).

So, for all Cars Movie lovers, this new movie is a must. We will probably end up seeing it again in the theater in the next few weeks.  And so should you!  But until then, we will continue to have fun, to enjoy life and summer, while keep on racing to the finish line… KA-CHOW!!!

throwback thursday: a peter pan birthday

It’s a little throwback Thursday birthday post!

The day my Logan turned 2 with an outdoor Peter Pan bash!  And it was one of my favorite parties of them all.

The Pan story has always been a favorite of mine.  Magic, pirates, mermaids and children that don’t want to grow up.  I loved the story as a kid, but I see another side of it as a mom… as one of the most difficult thing with children, is time.  I never have enough, their presence is like pixie dust and being with them is magic!

My Logy baby is not one that want many things, he’s very content with whatever he can find, doesn’t ask for much and he loves his family.  So, this time I chose the theme (like always, but I pretend it’s their idea, like inception!!!) and made it extra special for my little lost boy!

Summer parties are so much easier.  We used to live outside the city.  It had a huge backyard.  And the parties were amazing!

This time around, I created a space similar to the movie; we had a pirates and foam swords section, mermaids/pool, a tee-pee, and of course and outdoor movie theater!  That was the most fun to create.  Found some really cheap fabric to drape over the wooden frame my husband had built.  Stapled an old sheet for the backdrop and voilà!

I had made some Peter Pan hats for all the boys and the girls had Tinker Bell’s wings.  It was awesome to see all the kids dressed up and ready to celebrate our baby boy!

I had made a huge 5 story cake.  One of my best looking cake ever!  But the instant we brought is outside, it started to melt due to all the humidity, so it became 2 cakes!

A few days prior to my boys birthday, I usually do a photo shoot.  It’s less stressful for them to take some great pictures without wanting to play with all the friends and it gives me great décor, as everything is already there.  Pictures are the best.  Also, I find that my kids love to look back on their birthdays and reminisce.  I’ve created small birthday booklet for each of their birthdays.  Chatbooks is the best for that.  Each book are about 8$ each, so even if they ruin one, I don’t get upset. For the Pan photo shoot, I probably used all the frames in our house for the occasion, and I was able to capture one of my favorite picture ever.

We had hot dogs and salads, and then popcorn for the movie!  And as always, too much cake!  We also had Brian’s cousin do some face painting and balloon animals.  It was a hit.

Birthday parties are always too short if you ask me!  Wish they’d last forever, so my boys could still be babies!  It’s so hard to see them grow up like that, but they have to, so at least we celebrate every year with style and fun!  I love to plan it all out and then see it come to life.  This one was for the books… I will never forget the day my baby turned 2: ‘second star to the right and straight on till morning’.

14 days of love

Last year, I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day for 14 days.  Why not… it’s love, and isn’t all about love?

We don’t have family that lives in our city, so date nights are pretty rare.  They used to happen all the time, we would go out one day to the restaurant, then the next day to the movies, then again to the restaurant, and on a good week we’d finish it by going to Royal Thai for dinner on Friday!  But since we’ve had kids, it’s been different!  We sometime sneak in a date when we visit our family on the weekend, as we tell them we’re coming down for the day when we’re actually only passing by to drop the kids… (thanks Mom, thanks Annick, thanks Brian’s mom) but to be honest, it doesn’t happen that often!

So my 14 days of love was for our entire family.  It’s doesn’t have to be an elaborate thing.  Here’s a few things we did last year:

-heart shaped pancakes

-wrote valentine cards for our friends and family

-made some strawberry pop-tarts for my coworkers

-bought myself new red nail polish… it counts!

-had a stay-at-home movie night with v-day popcorn

-went through all the Valentine’s Day cards that we received through the years… (yes, I kept all the cards… since I was a baby… I love these type of souvenirs!)

This year, I still want to do the 14-day Valentine thing, and here’s a few idea I’ve added on my list:

-go skate on the Rideau canal

-try a new restaurant

-make pink pancakes… this should happen every weekend!

-have the boys answer a little questionnaire about what they love and read it with them one day, like in 10 years…

-make more v-day popcorn… you can never have too much popcorn!

-heart shaped pizza TODAY

-wear fancy rain boots

So what’s your favorite V-Day tradition?

I hope you’ll try the 14 days of love this year!  Or at least try to treat yourself and your lover a couple times!

Happy Valentine month!

i heart fall…and a bucket list

14344719_10154315537831293_7321127485979552617_n

It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me: Fall is my favorite season of all!!!  I love every season for different little things…but Fall, oh how I just love you.

I don’t particularly like orange or black or brown, but to mix these colors together, to put a sweater on, and to turn the calendar page to October; makes my heart swoon!

Pumpkin waffle candles, pumpkin spice lattes, leaves changing color, and my new hat knitted by my mom: I’m ready for you Fall!

The boys have definitely inherited my love for anything Fall.  Their list of costumes is already a mile long and they’re longing for the day the first leave will fall.  Picking out pumpkin is always a blast.  I could spend hours carving them, actually, I DO spend hours carving pumpkins!!!  Our Halloween movies are all lined up, and I have to admit, we already watched all of our favorite one at least once (I may or may not have watched Hocus Pocus 8 times since the beginning of September).

This year, I made a bucket list.  We have so many things we want to do this fall, so this chalkboard is keeping us on track!

What is your favorite Fall activity?  Or do you have something great for Fall in your region that we should check out.  Our costumes are almost ready…are you?  Just kidding, I know you’re not crazy like me; it’s not even October yet!
